O konkursie

Droga na Harvard to konkurs adresowany do uczniów gimnazjów i szkół średnich, studentów uczelni państwowych i prywatnych oraz absolwentów, którzy chcieliby studiować na uczelniach amerykańskich, zwłaszcza na Uniwersytecie Harvarda. Nagrodą główną jest wyjazd 4 laureatów na dziesięciodniowy pobyt w USA z wizytą na Uniwersytecie Harvarda. Harvard Club of Poland pokrywa wszystkie koszty podróży, zakwaterowania, wyżywienia oraz ubezpieczenia zdrowotnego.

Jaki jest nasz cel?

Celem konkursu jest promowanie wśród Polaków idei studiowania na renomowanych uczelniach zagranicznych, w szczególności na Harvardzie, podniesienie poziomu wiedzy na temat wymagań, jakie uczelnia stawia kandydatom oraz zwrócenie uwagi na możliwości uzyskania pomocy finansowej przeznaczonej dla najzdolniejszych. W naszym konkursie chcemy pomóc najlepszym polskim uczniom, studentom oraz absolwentom szkół wyższych w rozpoczęciu studiów na Harvardzie. Chcemy, aby nasi laureaci stali się przykładem do naśladowania dla innych młodych ludzi w kraju. Mamy wreszcie wielką nadzieję, że po zakończeniu studiów polscy absolwenci Harvardu powrócą do kraju i nadal będą krzewili ideę studiów zagranicznych.

Do kogo skierowany jest konkurs?

Szukamy zdolnych i nieprzeciętnych osób pragnących studiować na Uniwersytecie Harvarda. Program adresowany jest do licealistów, studentów oraz absolwentów studiów wyższych, którzy chcą kształcić się na Harvardzie i innych najlepszych uczelniach amerykańskich. Ponieważ proces właściwego przygotowania do ubiegania się o przyjęcie na tę uczelnię może trwać kilka lat, konkurs adresujemy również do gimnazjalistów. Chcemy wspomóc pasjonatów nauki, sportu i kultury, a w szczególności osoby angażujące się w sprawy społeczne – co jest jednym z kryteriów podczas samej rekrutacji na Harvard. Chcielibyśmy pomóc w dalszej drodze rozwoju najzdolniejszych, a studia na Harvardzie mogą być jednym z najlepszych sposobów osiągnięcia stawianych sobie przez młodych ludzi celów.

Regulamin konkursu Droga na Harvard

Etap I – Eliminacje

Zgłaszanie kandydatur do 15 kwietnia 2012 r.

Tylko kompletne i właściwie wypełnione zgłoszenia (m.in. z zachowaniem limitów znaków w eseju) oraz przesłane na nasz serwer na podany adres do godz. 23:59:59 15 kwietnia 2012 r. będą rozpatrywane przez Harvard Club of Poland. Z uwagi na spodziewane liczne zgłoszenia i możliwe utrudnienia w ostatnich godzinach przyjmowania zgłoszeń, zachęcamy do wypełnienia formularza zgłoszeniowego w dniach wcześniejszych. W eseju zwracamy szczególną uwagę na umiejętność jasnego i uporządkowanego wyrażania własnych opinii.

Etap II – Finał

Na podstawie otrzymanych zgłoszeń Harvard Club of Poland telefoniczne poinformuje wybranych 30 finalistów o rozmowie kwalifikacyjnej, która odbędzie się w Warszawie w dniach 2/3 czerwca 2012 roku. Spośród 30 finalistów Kapituła Konkursu wybierze 20 Laureatów oraz 4 Laureatów Nagrody Głównej. Lista 20 Laureatów będzie udostępniona 4 czerwca na stronie Harvard Club of Poland. Ogłoszenie 4 Laureatów Nagrody Głównej nastąpi na uroczystej Gali która odbędzie się 13 czerwca br. w obecności gości, sponsorów oraz członków Harvard Club of Poland.

Przyjazd finalistów na spotkanie konkursowe w Warszawie oraz Galę Finałową odbywa się na ich koszt własny. Na rozmowę kwalifikacyjną konieczne jest zabranie dowodu tożsamości oraz zestawienia ocen poświadczonych przez szkołę lub uczelnię.

Wyjazd 4 Laureatów nagrody Głównej odbędzie się pod koniec września 2012 r. Harvard Club of Poland pokrywa wszystkie koszty podróży, zakwaterowania, wyżywienia oraz ubezpieczenia zdrowotnego.

Ważna informacja

Chcemy podkreślić, że konkurs Droga na Harvard nie jest w żadnym stopniu częścią oficjalnego procesu przyjęcia na studia na Uniwersytecie Harvarda, a jedynie umożliwia bliższe zapoznanie się z uczelnią i zasadami przyjęcia w poczet studentów. Ponadto udział w tym konkursie nie stwarza preferencyjnych możliwości zostania studentem Harvardu bądź uzyskania pomocy finansowej na pokrycie kosztów studiów ani procedury przyjęcia na studia. Zachęcamy kandydatów i uczestników konkursu Droga na Harvard do samodzielnego upewnienia się, jakie kryteria rekrutacji stawiane są w każdym indywidualnym przypadku. Wniosek może być wycofany na każdym etapie postępowania konkursowego, na pisemną prośbę kandydata. Wnioski niekompletne, niespełniające warunków formalnych konkursu oraz wnioski złożone po wyznaczonym terminie, nie będą rozpatrywane. W danej edycji można złożyć tylko jeden wniosek do konkursu. Harvard Club of Poland zastrzega możliwość zmiany liczby finalistów i laureatów oraz zmiany terminów z podaniem ich do publicznej wiadomości; decyzje na wszystkich etapach konkursu są ostateczne i nie przysługuje od nich prawo odwołania. W przypadku zakwalifikowania do drugiego etapu, kandydat zobowiązany jest do przedstawienia oryginału dokumentu poświadczającego oceny uzyskane w trakcie dotychczasowej nauki (w przypadku osób uczących się) lub z ostatniej szkoły (w przypadku osób które już zakończyły naukę). Oceny z okresu nauki nie są jedynym kryterium selekcji finalistów i laureatów, ale mogą ułatwić członkom Kapituły dokonania wyboru. W przypadku nieuzyskania przez laureata wizy USA w wyznaczonym terminie, nagroda może być przekazana przez Harvard Club of Poland innej osobie i wówczas nie przysługuje żadna rekompensata za ewentualne poniesione koszty. Nagroda może być cofnięta, jeśli laureat działa na szkodę lub naruszy dobre imię Harvard Club of Poland bądź Uniwersytetu Harvarda.

Several Comments by individual members of the Admissions Committee:

The Common and Universal College Application essay topics are broad. While this might seem daunting at first, look at it as an opportunity to write about something you care about, rather than what you think the Admissions Committee wants to hear. The point of the personal statement is for you to have the chance to share whatever you would like with us. Remember, your topic does not have to be exotic to be compelling.

Some of the best essays I’ve read during my time as an admissions officer have been about seemingly insignificant topics. As you write, focus on allowing your voice and personality to come through; if I feel I have come to know you better from having read your essay, then I consider it a job well done.

The essay is an opportunity for students to provide information that might not be contained in other parts of the application. The precise number of words in the essay is not particularly important, but the best essays are generally in the range of the suggested number.

As an admissions officer, I personally get excited to read through an essay that has a great lead. Think of your opening sentence or paragraph as the hyperlink on your favorite news website. You want that opening paragraph or sentence to be compelling enough that the reader would ‘click’ on your link and read all about YOU.

Editing is a critical talent that will become increasingly important as students advance through college, graduate and professional school, and, of course, in their professions. Please consider the admissions essay a good opportunity to apply and perhaps develop that skill.

It can be helpful to have your essay reviewed by another person to check on typos, etc., but the beauty of a good essay is that it captures the tone and personality of the applicant. Sometimes too much editing prevents us from getting a sense of your real voice.

Don’t make your essay sound like a lengthy recitation or a thesaurus. The essay is not a vocabulary test! Don’t feel the need to consult a thesaurus to impress us with your vocabulary. We want to get a glimpse of who you are, not who you think we want you to be. Relax; we just want to get to know you better.

Believe it or not, the essay nearly always fits in with the rest of the application. A terrific one can help and a careless one can hurt. But most of the time the quality of the essay reflects the strength of the applicant.

Use the essay to convey more about you and what you value. To do this, write about what you know, not what you think might be an impressive topic.

As we have noted earlier, we realize that students have widely varying help in preparing their applications. Some students have completed the essay entirely on their own. Others have used appropriate amounts of help from family, friends and teachers. Such help would include proofreading and general suggestions about organization as well as brainstorming about topics. Still other students may have been preparing for the essay for many years with too much help from a variety of sources, including borderline plagiarism (or worse), using the Internet or various essay writing publications and services. As is the case with any other part of the application, the essay is merely one of many factors considered by the Admissions Committee and we can usually tell if it is real or not.

We look carefully to see how consistent the essay is with other parts of the application, including grades in English courses, standardized tests, and, occasionally, the actual download of the essay that is part of the SAT and ACT. It is impossible to make up for serious deficiencies in the other parts of the student’s application (such as high school grades) with an essay.
